#dailycolonist1914 - News out of Victoria, British Columbia, 100 years ago today:

• Japanese capture of the Marshall Islands [A German protectorate at the time] causes concern, particularly in the United States, over Japan exceeding its treaty obligations to Britain. British issue statement reiterating the limits of Japan's involvement with assurances from "Tokio" that "Japan has no intention of retaining the Marshall Islands." [But Japan will colonise the islands and keep them until they are taken by the United States, who will repeatedly nuke the crap out of them between 1946 and 1962 (Bikini Atoll is one of the Marshall Islands)]
• Siege of Antwerp is the main news. City is being shelled and bombed by Zeppelins. Heavy shelling along second line of forts [where my grandparents, 10 and 14 at the time were living]. Ground fighting between first and second lines of forts. King Albert leaves the city, city is considered "doomed".
• Editorial on the arrival of the first Canadian expeditionary force. Canadian troops "now stand on the soil of the Motherland ready to go anywhere in the service of the Empire....Canada is proving herself to be a worthy daughter of a noble mother."
• Account of German shelling of Tahiti [French].
