The Daily Colonist, October 18, 1914

#dailycolonist1914 - News out of Victoria, British Columbia, 100 years ago today:

• Map showing current lines of the Western front. All of Belgium except for a tiny corner around Ypres is in German hands.
• Summary of the current state of the war: Germans pushing toward Calais, but being held. News from the Russian front is sparse and conflicting. Cholera outbreak in Hungary is stalling and confounding things. The plus side is the Russians are keeping Germany fighting on two fronts. Turkey is still not officially in the war, but the Black Sea is cut off for shipping.
• Assurances from South Africa that Boer rebellion is not serious and in general South Africa, English and Boer alike, is loyal to the Empire. 
• [Meanwhile in the Wild West] Armed bank robbers in Sedro-Woolley escape with $20,000 after gunfight. "A posse was immediately organized, and is searching the woods, but all trace of the men was lost soon after they left the bank, and it is doubtful whether they will be caught."
• [And on the moon] Naval fighting on Lake Nyassa [Lake Malawi]. Really just a British boat shooting at a docked German boat with it's engines out for repair, missing it three times, winging it on the fourth, at which point the German captain comes out to yell at the English, only learning at that point that there is a war on.
• Summary of the weeks events in the Children's section of the Sunday magazine is excellent, as usual, and includes topics I haven't otherwise bothered with, like the death of the King of Romania. The threat of Zeppelin attack on London is talked about and the sentiments we are supposed to remember on Remembrance Day come up. "Surely, children, the world will find some better way to settle the quarrels of the future than by wholesale butchery and wholesale robbery. Men must fight today, but let us hope it will be the last fight..."
