#dailycolonist1915 #WWI - The news out of Victoria, British Columbia, 100 years ago:

Drug runners, whalers, pirates, propaganda, protests, Zeppelin attacks, giant telescopes, darkest Africa, Hallowe'en haunted houses, murder and atrocities are just a few of the things I've picked out from October 1915.

In this update: Zeppelins, conspiracy theory (1915 style), propaganda, genocide, fall fashions, exploration and discovery in the far north, a major allied offensive on the western front and more.

A big update as I try to catch up, ending on the anniversary of the event the started the war.

In a mere two days we have genocide, secret agents, conspiracy, awards from the king, real technology that reads like steampunk fiction and a new university.

The bulk of the war lurches on. The Anglo-French push in the Dardanelles continues, German and Austrian forces make a little headway in repelling the Russians in Galacia, all the other fronts are pretty much as they have been for weeks. The American and Germans are tediously talking about the angry letters already exchanged and threatening more stern diplomacy. All the interesting things are more local, the tangential and trivial oddness that has been forgotten, including things that echo some current things because forgotten history really does get repeated.

This instalment covers two weeks to make up for missing my usual post last week. While the Italians are in the war now, and while horrific fighting on both European fronts and also in the Dardanelles continues, the news of it is repetitive and not particularly enlightening. The most interesting and remarkable things, however, are outside that realm: Zeppelin raids, submarine pirates, the (bizarre when seen with modern eyes) casual racism of 1915, and more.

#dailycolonist1915 - The news out of Victoria, British Columbia, 100 years ago:

You'd almost think this week's news was a steampunk fanfic and not the actual news from 100 years ago. We've got submarine and Zeppelin pirates, a secret submarine base in Asia Minor, Zeppelins bombing London, the king's birthday, and earls being knighted. We also have the beginnings of forced labour in Canadian concentration camps and the Armenian Genocide in Turkey. But we wrap up the week with good news from Denmark.

#dailycolonist1915 - The news out of Victoria, British Columbia, 100 years ago:

Excluding the news of a Zeppelin attack on London, it is impossible to look at the events of this week outside of the context of the tyrannical fear-mongering of the Harper government and bill C-51. It can be plainly seen by these articles from a century ago that things are not any more or less dangerous and all that is happening is a profound step backwards toward a time when people, like my great-grandparents, were forced to register with the police and report regularly on the threat of being packed away to forced labour camps simply for the crime of having been born in the wrong country.
