« previous next »#dailycolonist1914 - News out of Victoria, British Columbia, 100 years ago today:
- Prime Minister Sir Robert Borden [the guy on the $100 bill] addresses members of the Canadian Club of Montréal in two speeches. Stresses that the war should bring greater independence to self-administering Dominions in the British Empire.
- Strange little article on the number of Jews in the German army [odd and irrelevant in the 1914 context, interesting from a historical context aware of events in Germany through the 1930's and 1940's]
- A more detailed report on Sir Robert Borden's speeches in Montréal, including interesting sections on Britain's culpability in causing the war, the failure of pre-war German intelligence gathering, more details on the semi-independence of self-governing Dominions, and renewed vows to keep sending men until victory is achieved.
- A notice on the back page that "All Subjects of Germany, Austria-Hungary and the Ottoman Empire" must register by December 31 or be liable to arrest as a prisoner of war.
